Cliff Notes Version:
- School Shooting
- Allegheny County - Beechview
- Three shot, most likely not lethal
- One was merely grazed
- Dismissal time
I'm not going to go into too much depth here, for the simple fact that this is merely two hours old and facts have yet to surface, but I had to something.
I had to.
Shootings at schools and deaths are schools are what dominate the media as it is, but I had to say something since I just mentioned this in my last post. I will add something later if I can find out more once information was released, and I have been working on a good post about a different topic. And then I get the report that a shooting had happened here in Pittsburgh.
There are times as a Blogger I suddenly feel the need that I have to say something, and I don't necessarily have the time to plan it out. As I journalist student, I can chalk this up to the phenomenon of "Breaking News."
For readers that are in that area and may know victims, you have my deepest sympathies. This is a tragedy that NEEDS TO STOP RIGHT NOW.
Why are we shooting each other? Why are we shooting KIDS?
WHY?
Like I said, I will do a full feature once more information comes out, but I feel as I had to say something.-R
It is a good question "why are we kids driven to shoot each other?" Often, the debate focuses on the availability of the the means (and personally, I feel it should be much harder for a teen to get their hands on a gun), instead of the motivation.
ReplyDeleteAs school shootings keep happening, security gets tighter and shootings still happen. Our schools are closer to becoming "secure" facilities akin to prisons: we lock all of the students in, force them to co-mingle without providing the room to have personal space to retreat from other students --who, let's face it--can be cruel. And then we wonder why some denizens in the system are driven to these lengths.
Exactly. I can't imagine what it is like for kids now, knowing as bad as it was for me in school. Teachers couldn't do much of anything, other than move the bully and victim apart, and that didn't solve anything. The year I left Jr. High for the Sr. High did see some improvements. They set up a "Time Out Room" (yes, groan at the name) where bullies were sent for that class period. At least it got them out of the room, and was fairly utilized from what I understand.
DeleteThe biggest thing that helped me though was getting into a fight. Once, it was quick and over, and nobody bothered me again. I hate to say it, but it did work. Things shouldn't get to that extreme, though. They need to be sorted out long before that becomes the only option left. I wish I had a solution to bring out, but I truly don't.
Even at the moment, take time to ponder what you have to offer. I remember Facebook friends posting "oh no, another one." To me it seemed different, not just because it was local. The others felt more random, involving untreated mental health issues.
